Motivational Interviewing - Lesson 4A

Please read the following article and complete the individual exercise below by 5 PM ET the day before the next live webinar. NOTE: please make sure you scroll all the way down to the end of the page and complete all activities.

Practice Makes Perfect! Try using your OARS skills again at home or at work with a family member, friend or client. Apply what you have learnt through the latest lectures and reading to complete Assignment 1 Implementation-of-Motivational-Interviewing-Skills.

Note: This exercise is optional. You do not have to submit this assignment but will have an opportunity to reflect and debrief  in the next live session.

Individual Exercise 2: 

Instructions: Please spend some time practicing your responses to the client’s comments using the OARS (Open ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening and Summary Statements). For this activity, read the response from the clients.  Provide an example response to each of the client’s comment using one of the four OARS skills and name which OARS strategy you used.

Comment 1: “I am not sure if you can help me. I have chronic back pain.  I have tried everything and I only get comfort at night if I have 2-3 beers.”

Comment 2: “I get a lot of exercise at work. I am never standing still!  After work, I am so busy with getting dinner ready and doing things around the house that I can not fit in exercise.”

Comment 3: “I am not sure why my physician thought I should speak with you. Overall, my diet is good.  I cook home cooked meals for my family 4 days a week.  I know I should eat more vegetables but I hate salads.”
