What is monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and how do you leverage it to improve your program chances of success?
Program monitoring and evaluation (M&E) is a process that can ensure continuous program quality improvement within changing contexts. This applied course is geared towards program managers, personnel, and decision makers from the health care and social service sectors.
Gain a M&E planning skill set to work with stakeholders such as external consultants, researchers, funders, and program participants, to design and implement an evaluation plan to help you achieve program objectives. Learn how to use a tangible M&E planning framework that you can take-away to your workplace.
Programs examples include: health promotion programs such as diabetes education, wellness programs, interventions such as violence prevention, substance use, physical activity interventions, or social programs such as poverty reduction, housing program, and others.
This course is ideal for individuals who are knowledgeable about program development and management, but do not have formal research training in M&E. Understand how to assign values to tangible and intangible program benefits, weight future program costs and benefits, and determine intended and unintended outcomes resulting from a program.

Mina Singh, PhD
Dr. Mina Singh is a faculty member in the School of Nursing at York University and was the Coordinator of the Program Evaluation Unit from 2011-2013, at the York Institute for Health Research. She was nominated for the Dean’s Award of Excellence, Faculty of Health Research Award - Late career (2012). She received a National Nursing Education Scholar award in November, 2012 to promote research through inquiry, mentorship, and dissemination. She also received the 2014 Accreditation Reviewer Excellence award from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing.
She has been a program evaluator for over 18 years and has conducted several types of evaluations (input, process, outcome and impact) and has developed a methodological framework which is being used internationally and nationally for evaluation of nursing programs. The content of healthcare programs which Dr. Singh has evaluated include: workshops on the Ontario Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Framework adopted by the Central LHIN, worked with Community Health Centres to evaluate their Diabetes Education programs across the city under the Ontario Diabetes Strategy, interprofessional model of care for arthritis, and the inclusivity and diversity project in York Region. She has recently completed a project with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and is presently involved in the development of a national survey for the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. She has presented a multitude of workshops on program evaluation in Toronto and York Region: logic model, types of evaluations, mixed methods, photovoice etc. and is well published. She teaches research methods and statistics to both undergraduate and graduate students and is a mixed methods researcher.
