Individual Exercise 2:

Instructions: Please spend some time practicing your responses to the client’s comments using the OARS (Open ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening and Summary Statements). For this activity, read the response from the clients.  Provide an example response to each of the client’s comment using one of the four OARS skills and name which OARS strategy you used.

Comment 1: “I am not sure if you can help me. I have chronic back pain.  I have tried everything and I only get comfort at night if I have 2-3 beers.”

Comment 2: “I get a lot of exercise at work. I am never standing still!  After work, I am so busy with getting dinner ready and doing things around the house that I can not fit in exercise.”

Comment 3: “I am not sure why my physician thought I should speak with you. Overall, my diet is good.  I cook home cooked meals for my family 4 days a week.  I know I should eat more vegetables but I hate salads.”

You must post your responses to the discussion questions in the comments section below before the  live lesson starts to earn your certificate of completion. The instructor will review your comments and have a debrief discussion during the next live session.
